Professor Jones

He had a brand new degree and a head full of doubt
Mom and Dad said, “Son, better figure it out”
So he called them from a hostel in Jerusalem
Said “I guess I’ll go back, study biochem”
Now his car is always broken and he’s always broke
He was feeling like the punch line of a practical joke
Until one night in the lab about half past ten
A genius in stilettos made him think again
'Cause she led him by the hand through her office door
And the lab coats fell on the tile floor
He was getting awfully tired of sleeping alone
Did he pass or did he fail, that night
With Professor Jones?
He knows she’s married to a Wall Street king
Who stopped giving a damn once he gave her the ring
He knows she’s got a couple sons almost his age
Makes him feel like he’s stuck in the Oedipal stage
Now mornings in the lab are a little strange
They haven’t said a word about it, but something’s changed
It’s hard to make small talk with the department head
When you’re trying not to think of what she did in bed
'Cause she led him by the hand through her office door
And the lab coats fell on the tile floor
He was getting awfully tired of sleeping alone
Did he pass or did he fail, that night
With Professor Jones?
She's got brains and charm and a Nobel prize
So nobody seems to care about her wandering eyes
And if anyone objects, they have yet to say
Every time she takes on a new protégé
He walked into her office with a bottle of wine
Said “I’ll pick you up Friday, at a quarter to nine”
She said “Calm down buddy, this is no big thing
You’re a real nice kid, but it was just a fling”
And now he spends his days staring at a petri dish
And his nights at the bar, where he drinks like a fish
Until a guy in khaki pants buys him one more brew
And says “Once upon a time, Jones got me too”
'Cause she led him by the hand through her office door
And the lab coats fell on the tile floor
He was getting awfully tired of sleeping alone
Did he pass or did he fail, that night
With Professor Jones?
Yes, she led him by the hand through her office door
And the lab coats fell on the tile floor
He was getting awfully tired of sleeping alone
Did he pass or did he fail, that night
With Professor Jones?

Made in Suburbia
03:43

The realtor says it’s just the kind of place to raise a family
It’s where you want to be
When you’re old
It’s got three bedrooms and a nice garage to park your Subaru
Paint the shutters blue
Call it sold!
The lady down the street invites herself to bring a casserole
Tries to save your soul
You decline
The folks from Little League say “Call us when you’re free some Saturday,
After PTA
Sparkling wine!”
Love it or hate it or say what you please
Two kids and two cars and two masters’ degrees
Ask where I’m from and you’ll know how to check
Just look at the tag on the back of my neck
It says “Made in Suburbia”
Suburbia, USA
Your neighbor’s jacket looks familiar, like the one you gave Goodwill
And his water bill
Is past due
You know that you’re the kind of person who would give a friend a hand
Would you lend a hand
If you knew?
Love it or hate it or say what you please
Two kids and two cars and two masters’ degrees
Ask where I’m from and you’ll know how to check
Just look at the tag on the back of my neck
It says “Made in Suburbia”
Suburbia, USA
You used to keep saying
By the time you were graying
You’d know what the skyline looked like in Shanghai
But the ache in your bones
Says there’s student loans
On the way, and you wonder how time learned to fly
Oh, love it or hate it or say what you please
Two kids and two cars and two masters’ degrees
Ask where I’m from and you’ll know how to check
Just look at the tag on the back of my neck
It says “Made in Suburbia”
“Made in Suburbia”
You’ve got it made in Suburbia
Suburbia, USA

The Innkeeper
02:30
|
|||
Good evening, weary traveler. I know you’ve wandered far.
You’re looking mighty lost, my dear. Do you know where you are?
Oh, these woods are dark and lonely, and it’s much too far to town
But I keep a cozy inn where you can set your knapsack down.
Come on inside, don’t waste the fading light-
Are you looking for a place to spend the night?
Good evening, weary traveler. The winds are roaring wild
So come and keep us company, just a widow and her child
Yes, my Johnny died and left me with a boy not five years old
And though his grave is chilly, now my bed feels twice as cold
I do believe we’ll get along all right
Now, don’t you need a place to spend the night?
Good morning, weary traveler. I hope your sleep was grand
My penmanship is shaky but I know you’ll understand
That the road from here is rocky, with no sign to point the way
So I reckon you’ll be glad to find your pack is light today.
Yes, I’ll sell your shiny pocket watch for shoes for my young son
And out here in the wilderness, I’ll need your nice new gun
And I’ll keep the pantry stocked with all the money from your purse
But don’t you go and fret, my dear, you might have done much worse.
Alone out there, you’d surely have a fright-
Good thing you found a place to spend the night.

Currents
05:03
|
|||
There are currents
In the sea
That schools of fish ride home
And there are currents
In the air
Where toy balloons can roam
So if I grow wings or I grow gills
I'm not the first to try
And the two of you can take my word
It doesn’t mean goodbye
Across the world
Across the street
Wherever I may find my feet
I know all I can do
Is give you my reassurance
I'll drift back on the currents
There are tickets
All for sale
To go in all directions
And there are pictures
Of what might be
That vie for my affections
And if ever I am tethered down
I hope that I can say
I've gone beyond my own backyard
And I'll go again someday
Across the world
Across the street
Wherever I may find my feet
I know all I can do
Is give you my reassurance
I'll drift back on the currents
Maple seeds that catch the breeze
Don't move by their own power
But I can steer, and I can hear
In my darkest or my finest hour
You will call my name
There are currents
In the wire
That carries my voice in it
And there are currencies
Coins of the realm
I put in for my next minute
And the pitch and rhythm of my speech
Might strike your ears as strange
But as long as you stay on the line
The words I say won't change
Across the world
Across the street
Wherever I may find my feet
I know all I can do
Is give you my reassurance
I'll drift back on the currents
I'll drift back on the currents
I'll drift back on the currents

Stripper Boots
02:31
|
|||
Saturday nights around here are all the same
The same stale beer and the same old drinking games
But that’s not my crowd, that’s not my scene
My friend said “Honey, I know what you mean-”
She said, “Heads are gonna turn,
Folks will make a fuss,
Tonight the party’s gonna follow us
Put on your little red dress
And I’ll wear my stripper boots.”
Don’t hand me that plastic cup of booze
Bring out a bunch of grapes and champagne served in shoes
There’s not much life in this living room
So let’s make all the wallflowers bloom
Heads are gonna turn,
Folks will make a fuss,
Tonight the party’s gonna follow us
Put on your little red dress
And I’ll wear my stripper boots.
Slick black vinyl up to my knees
Nature never made any leather like these
Skirt so short we’ll cause a scandal
Let’s see what this town can handle
So come on by, be sure to bring your friends
It starts at ten and who knows when it ends
And if you wanna dance, it’s fine by me
Long as you get up on the table so we all can see
Heads are gonna turn,
Folks will make a fuss,
Tonight the party’s gonna follow us
Put on your little red dress
And I’ll wear my stripper boots.
Let down your hair
Take off those business suits
Put on your little red dress
And I’ll wear my stripper boots.
